Island Hopping: Painting Hawaii’s Largest Airport Car Rental Facility

Over the past 20 years, Consolidated Painting, LLC has earned a spotless reputation for tackling some of the toughest commercial painting challenges in Hawaii. There’s no better example than their recent completion of a $340 million Kahului Airport Consolidated Rent-A-Car (CONRAC) facility.

The three-story CONRAC is the largest such facility on the islands. The 1.3 million-square-foot building covers 19 acres and contains rental car company offices, customer- service counters and nearly 4,500 parking stalls.

“The most challenging parts of the job were mobilizing and working from afar,” says Joe Ferrera of Consolidated Painting. “Our office is on O’ahu and the project was on Maui. Being in Hawaii, we also had to take into account how long it would take to receive product. These challenges required a great deal of planning and coordination. We would have weekly meetings on Maui to ensure everything was organized and running smoothly.”

Sherwin-Williams, he says, helped in numerous ways.

“Communication with the store was vital in making sure we received the right product in time, orders could be filled, and deliveries were coordinated,” Ferrera says. “Even Sherwin-Williams financial team played an important role in providing the financing we needed as well as assistance with lien releases.”

11,210 gallons of dryfall paint

Painting ceilings was a major part of the job. The total area to be coated was equivalent to the size of 24 football fields and required 11,210 gallons of Pro Industrial™ Waterborne Acrylic Dryfall Eg-Shel.

“With its ability to dry before hitting the floor and ease of spray application, Pro Industrial Dryfall was the perfect product to coat all the ceilings inside the CONRAC,” says Ferrera. “It saved time and reduced the concern of overspray.”

10 miles of fire piping

In addition, over 10 miles of fire piping had to be painted with safety red paint. Consolidated selected Pro Industrial™ DTM Acrylic Safety Red.

“DTM was a great choice since we could receive it pre-packaged, allowing it to have better coverage,” Ferrera says. “For metal areas that were exposed to the outside elements, we relied on a system that we’ve used many times in the past: Macropoxy 646 and Hi-Solids Polyurethane. This is a system that we know will hold up well and provide excellent corrosion resistance, which is especially important being so close to the ocean.”

Interior air quality

To ensure the occupants would be comfortable from day one, Harmony® Interior Acrylic Latex was used throughout the office spaces.

Completed in May after almost two years of work, the new CONRAC is something both the painters and the community can take pride in.

“The project adds beauty and functionality to Kahului, and it also goes a long way toward meeting Governor David Ige’s goals for improving the environment, traffic, energy and the economy,” says Ford Fuchigami, Hawaii Department of Transportation Director.
