I’m painting a stucco exterior. What’s the best test for chalkiness and how do I tell if a barrier coat is needed?

First of all, washing or powerwashing with just cold water may not remove these contaminants. A good cleaner/degreaser used in conjunction with washing may help remove the chalk.

If some chalk remains after first washing, then wash again for complete removal; scrubbing may be necessary. Rinse well with clear water. Allow to dry thoroughly.

I would recommend using Loxon® Conditioner Guide Coat White as the primer/sealer/conditioner prior to finish coating.
